FIBI - Just Go!

Hi! Welcome!

Thanks for checking out our blog. I’m Tim, and along with one of my best friends, Meg, we’re the people behind the Sonic Michigan Podcast.

So why does this podcast exist? There are a few reasons:

  1. Mental Health

  2. Scratching That Itch

  3. Love for the Great Lakes

  4. Bedtime “AHA” Moment

Mental Health & Scratching That Itch

“What is the kindest thing I can do for myself right now?”

That’s what my therapist wants me to ask myself multiple times each day. Yup—a therapist.

I’m a pretty chill guy with a positive outlook on life. I have a loving and supportive partner, great family and friends, a strong connection to my faith, and a fun, desirable job with lots of one-of-a-kind opportunities. But something wasn’t right.

I couldn’t shake whatever was bothering me or even pinpoint what was wrong. It’s hard to explain, especially since I’d never felt this way before.

The things that usually brought me joy didn’t anymore. My interest in doing anything was zero. I never felt sad, but I knew I was not OK.

I went on a mission to figure it out: Was it a midlife crisis? A chemical imbalance? A need for new goals? I got nowhere, so I sought help from a therapist—and it’s been a game changer.

A Few Takeaways from Therapy

  • 👉 Listen to my needs and honor them.

  • 👉 It is not my responsibility to make sure everybody else is OK.

  • 👉 Let the anger out and look at it as an object to understand it.

Two things kept coming up in my sessions with my therapist, Susan:

  1. I need more nature.

  2. I need a new creative outlet.

And just like that, we had our first two reasons for Sonic Michigan.

Great Lakes Love

Meg and I have been talking about doing a road trip and exploring Michigan’s Upper Peninsula for a decade. I grew up in Michigan, and my mom was a teacher, so we explored the state all the time. I really miss that. We’ve talked about: Visiting the Soo Locks. Seeing the Northern Lights. Enjoying the wine in the Traverse City area

Can you see this coming together now?

The Bedtime Aha Moment

Everyone has a nighttime routine. Ours includes listening to a podcast. Sometimes it’s a comedy podcast like Stiff Socks. Other times it’s a history podcast like American History Tellers. And once in a while, I’d say: “Chris, put on some waves or something.” So we’d listen to generic ocean waves or rainforest sounds. That’s when it hit me:

“Wouldn’t it be cool if we could pick where we fall asleep to each night?”

And THAT’S when all four of these ideas came together.

FIBI: The Final Push

The next morning, I called Meg and told her about my idea—and the brainstorming began.

There are so many takeaways from this entire process, but one stood out more than anything else: a new phrase I learned. FIBI Fuck it. Book it.

If you and your friend or family keep talking about a fun adventure— FIBI. Just go.
